About this route

Full day across New York State. We typically cross at Buffalo and take I-90 east, then south on I-87. A regular route for NYC-bound dogs, though the US 6-month minimum age applies, so a young puppy cannot travel in this direction.

What you'll need

The dog must be at least 6 months old

Since August 2024 the United States has required every dog entering the country to be a minimum of 6 months of age. There is no exemption for a purchased puppy. If the dog is younger than that on the day of travel, this trip cannot legally be completed, and no paperwork gets around it. Plan the placement date around the dog's date of birth. How the CDC form works.

  • ✓ Dog is 6 months of age or older on the day of travel
  • ✓ Microchip, required for CDC compliance
  • ✓ CDC Dog Import Form receipt
  • ✓ Current rabies vaccination certificate
  • ✓ Health certificate from a licensed veterinarian
